American sportswear brand Nike plans to create a range of digital fashion products after filing a range of trademark applications for virtual trainers, clothes and accessories.
At the end of last month, the company filed seven applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office for use on “downloadable virtual goods” and “online and in online virtual worlds”. The brand’s widely recognized tick logo and basketball player logo have been included in the application as well as its Just Do It slogan.
“Nike is protecting their trademarks for this new era,” said Josh Gerben, trademark attorney. “The trademark filings would very clearly be a nod to this idea of the metaverse. They’re going to launch and start selling virtual clothing, headwear, shoes in online and virtual worlds.”
In addition to the trademark requests, Nike also posted openings for a virtual material designer of footwear and other virtual design roles.
