Mothers need not only care and love but also safe environment

‘This day is not only about care and love for all mothers but also about friendly environment built with due consideration of their interests. I mean inclusiveness, safety, cleanliness, and openness. In particular, easy breastfeeding and swaddling outside the house’, Acting Minister of Health of Ukraine Uliana Suprun wrote on Facebook on Mother’s Day. According to her, today’s cities all over the world implement initiatives aimed at building of kid-and-parent friendly environment with numerous protected green areas and playgrounds, speed-limit signs near child care centers, sidewalks, bike paths, curb cuts, elevators, ramped approaches, etc.

‘Ministry of Health of Ukraine often draws attention to inclusiveness of environment in children’s healthcare institutions. For instance, prohibition from entering them with baby strollers is considered as silly and inadmissible’, said the Acting Minister. She also stated that kid-and-parent friendliness is critical not only for healthcare institutions but for any other public space. High quality of public spaces is extremely important both for promoting child development and making moms’ everyday routine much easier.

‘Municipal governments and other change agents should take these into account. To show our love for mothers, we should enhance the quality of their lives’, concluded Uliana Suprun.
