World Origami Day is celebrated on 11 November. It was established by Nippon Origami Association in 1980 to mark the end of World War I, which officially ended at 11:00 on 11 November 1918. It was the first day of peace after the war lasting four years and three months. The symbol of this day was Japanese paper crane.
Classical origami is a figure from a square sheet of special paper, folded without the use of scissors or other tools. It is believed that origami originated from ancient China, where paper was invented. But this art developed mainly in Japan, where it became an important ceremonial component.
However, origami has evolved from the art of folding paper figures into a true global trend. Strict geometry and conciseness of forms are increasingly gaining ground in the world of design. Its elements are used in the most unexpected objects, e.g. interior, household items, clothing, web design and visual arts.
